Los Angeles based recording artist Joseph Rutakangwa is entering a more intentional musical chapter, where emotional clarity, melody and simplicity are becoming the foundation of his forthcoming album.
After six years of releasing music, Joseph Rutakangwa is becoming increasingly interested in what can be removed.
For the Los Angeles based recording artist and songwriter, that does not mean making music smaller. It means giving the emotion more room to exist. A piano, an acoustic guitar, a bass and a voice can sometimes communicate more than an arrangement crowded with ideas.
That instinct toward simplicity is becoming central to the music Rutakangwa is creating now.
His relationship with music has never belonged to one genre. Growing up, he absorbed soul, rock, Afropop, indie folk, Latin music and other sounds that became connected to different memories and periods of his life. When he began releasing his own music in 2020, exploration felt natural.
The decision to start came during the pandemic. Faced with the uncertainty of that period, Rutakangwa realized how easily a dream continually postponed could become a dream never attempted. He released his first music that summer and spent the years that followed discovering what felt natural to him as an artist.
Songs including “Avani,” “I Am Meant for You” and “Please God” reflect different points in that exploration. The value of those years, however, has not simply been accumulating releases. They have helped Rutakangwa become more selective.
He is now developing a new album centered on love, intimacy, vulnerability and relationships. Those themes have reinforced his attraction to emotionally direct songwriting. When a song is about allowing another person close, fear, desire or choosing to remain present, there is little reason for the production to hide what the song is trying to say.
That does not mean the forthcoming project will be confined to one sonic template. Rutakangwa’s influences remain broad, and he is comfortable allowing individual songs to find the sound they need. The principle is simpler: production should serve the emotion rather than compete with it.
The album itself is also being constructed as a complete journey. Each song is intended to stand independently while moving a larger relationship forward. The emotional position at the end should not be the same as it was at the beginning.
For Rutakangwa, this represents a shift from exploration toward intention. Earlier in his recording journey, the question was what he could create. Increasingly, the question is what a song actually needs.
Sometimes the answer may be very little.
The album title, tracklist and release date have not yet been announced. But the philosophy guiding this next chapter is already becoming clear. Rutakangwa is not trying to make his music more complicated in order to make it feel bigger. He is trying to make every element earn its place.
After years of moving through different sounds, he is finding that the shortest route to something powerful may also be the simplest one: a melody, a voice and an emotion that does not need explaining.
