Johannesburg is vibrating. Every street, rooftop, and club pulses with Amapiano, Afrobeat, and Afro-house — a sound that reinvents itself every week. It’s a city where DJs, producers, and artists experiment constantly, and where new rhythms ripple out across the globe almost as soon as they’re created.
At the centre of this musical explosion is a new triple album from the international project Music in Space, capturing the city’s energy in three distinct chapters: The Overview, featuring songs in European forms; Astronaut in Africa, heavily influenced by JoBurg’s ever-changing beats; and The Remixes, where the coolest DJs transform the tracks into fresh, global club-ready sounds.

The album features some of South Africa’s most exciting contemporary voices: Zee Nxumalo, Boohle, Sir Trill, Touchline, HoneyBee Rapstar from Durban, and Mac J from Limpopo. And behind it all is Kgomotso Gobeni — known as The Plugg — whose influence and connections brought these collaborations to life, ensuring that each track carries the authentic pulse of Johannesburg.

Danish musician and filmmaker Bjørn Vidø, who has spent over five years travelling across seven continents, brought the project to JoBurg to capture this energy. His presence is deliberate but understated: he facilitates, documents, and blends the cinematic with the musical, letting the city, the artists, and the DJs take centre stage.
