In an emotional and deeply personal Music Times UK exclusive interview, Tony DeYoung, the talented rapper, opens up about his tumultuous childhood, marked by abandonment, neglect, and resilience.
Music Times UK: Tony, thank you for sharing your story with us. Can you start by telling us about your childhood and what it was like growing up with an absent father and a mother struggling with addiction?
Tony DeYoung: Growing up, my dad was never really in the picture. He abandoned me and my brother when we were young, and I barely ever saw him. My mom, on the other hand, was struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. She was often gone, partying at bars, leaving my brother and me to fend for ourselves.
Music Times UK: That must have been incredibly difficult for you and your brother. How did you cope with the lack of stability and support in your life?
Tony DeYoung: To be honest, it was tough. We often went hungry, and the electric would get turned off. The landlord would come knocking on the door, threatening to evict us. It was a constant struggle. But my brother and I, we stuck together. We had to rely on each other for support.
Music Times UK: It’s clear that your grandfather, Alvah DeYoung, played a significant role in your life. Can you tell us more about how he helped you and your brother?
Tony DeYoung: My grandfather Alvah, he’s the real MVP. He saw what was going on with my mom and how my brother and I were struggling. He stepped in and became a steady presence in our lives. He provided for us, made sure we had food on the table, and a roof over our heads. He taught me the importance of hard work, discipline, and perseverance.
Music Times UK: Your music is a reflection of your experiences and emotions. How do you channel your past into your art, and what message do you hope to convey to your listeners?
Tony DeYoung: My music is my therapy. It’s how I process my emotions and experiences. I hope that my story can inspire others who may be going through similar struggles. I want my listeners to know that they’re not alone, that there’s hope for a better future.
Music Times UK: Finally, Tony, what’s next for you? Any upcoming projects or collaborations that you can share with us?
Tony DeYoung: I’ve got a lot of new music in the works, and I’m excited to collaborate with some talented artists. I’m also looking forward to performing live and connecting with my fans.
