In a candid conversation with Music Times UK, Tony DeYoung, founder of Tony DeYoung
Entertainment, pulled back the curtain on the harsh realities of the music industry. According to
DeYoung, success in the music business comes with a hefty price tag.
“Unless you’re going on American Idol or America’s Got Talent or The Voice, you’re not getting
in the music industry for free,
” DeYoung bluntly stated.
“Digital marketing done correctly costs
thousands and thousands of dollars. You can look it up. This is a very expensive industry.
“
DeYoung emphasized that producing high-quality music videos and working with top-tier talent,
such as Grammy Award winners, requires a significant investment.
“Music videos cost and
recording with Grammy Awards winners that can get you that Grammy award attention costs
thousands.
“
For aspiring artists without a substantial budget, DeYoung offers a stark reality check: “If you
don’t have a budget, you should call this a hobby.
” Unless you’re already a proven act, don’t
expect to get paid upfront for shows or have someone else foot the bill for marketing.
“The music industry is no different than any other business,
” DeYoung explained.
“It costs
money to go to college and it costs money to start a business down the street. It costs money to
get ahead.
“
In an industry where talent is no longer the sole determining factor for success, DeYoung
stressed the importance of understanding the business side of music.
“Talent doesn’t sell tickets
anymore. We have artists who are less talented selling more tickets. So until you have a proven
track record, you can’t expect to get paid upfront for shows, you can’t expect to not get charged
for marketing.
“
DeYoung’s insights serve as a wake-up call for aspiring artists who believe that raw talent alone
can propel them to stardom. Instead, success in the music industry requires a combination of
talent, hard work, and a willingness to invest in one’s career.
As the music industry continues to evolve, Tony DeYoung Entertainment remains committed to
helping artists navigate the complex landscape and achieve their goals.
